YouTube Adds First Watch Pre-Video Advertisements

The New York Times reports that YouTube is trying a new form of advertising they’re calling “First Watch”. With First Watch, when a user watches a video from a specific professional partner, like The Onion for example, for the first time that day, they will see a short advertisement. That ad will only show up for the first viewing, but will also show up whether you come through the home page or through a posting on someone’s Facebook profile, for example.

Apparently the program is getting noticed by partners who want more advertising opportunities because ads on the home page are beginning to sell out, according to Baljeet Singh, senior product manager for video monetization at YouTube. It’s also gaining steam because people don’t seem to mind short ads before their videos as much as they once did. Thankfully these videos will only be shown before professional content from partners, not user-created content.
