How to do Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Work – SEO Services & Professionals

Search Engine OptimizationSearch Engine Optimization (SEO) is one of the newest cottage industries around, having only been in existence for maybe fifteen years. In that time, a lot has changed and the SEO services industry has grown quite a lot. It’s now possible to find a career in this growing and ever changing industry if you feel you might enjoy many of its different aspects, whether it’s copywriting, analytics, diagnostics or strategy, for example (though a true SEO expert has their hands in all of these pies). How can one find a career in this dynamic and exciting field?

First off, start reading. Blogs, books, official search engine websites, forums and everything in between. There are a lot of experts in the SEO field, and they all have great insights into what makes search engines tick (since they of course never tell us themselves), so keeping up with their observations and theories can be quite helpful. Places like Webmaster World, Search Engine Watch, SEOBook and many others can be treasure troves for new SEO professionals trying to weed their way through the industry.

Secondly, start small, such as in a part-time internship. There are many SEO internships available these days, both paid and unpaid. These are great ways to begin adding SEO experience to your resume and gain hands-on knowledge of SEO in an actual business environment. Doing internships will expand both your experience as well as your references, making you a more attractive candidate for future SEO positions.

Finally, decide whether you wish to go full-time or freelance. Both have their advantages and disadvantages of course, but one of the nice things about SEO is that you can do the work from anywhere, in an office or at home. This allows for maximum flexibility in order to adjust to your lifestyle.

These are just some of the tips I can give to anyone looking to break into the SEO industry. It’s a lot of work, and none of it is quick and immediate, but if you have the drive and the desire, SEO work can be very fulfilling.
